Civil society in Abyei administrative area rejected any further cooperation with Aniet/Agok fact-finding committee chaired by Vice President for service cluster, Hussien Abdelbagi Akol. President Kiir formed this committee in February this year following the outbreak of communal conflict in Agok of Abyei Administrative Area between Twic and Ngok Dinka.

Chairperson of Abyei civil society Dr. Rou Minyiel Rou told Abyei FM on Wednesday that the  committee’s tenure of three months to investigate the root causes of the conflict has elapsed.

Rou accused the committee of being bias and called on President Kiir to establish another committee that will achieve peace between Ngok and Twic communities.

Though the two communities signed cessation of hostilities agreement in Aweil in April, fighting still continues.

On 25th last month, armed youth from Twic county attacked several villages in Abyei Administrative Area, killing seven people and wounding ten others.

On February 10th fighting first erupted in Agok when armed youth from Twic county, Warrap State opened fire on the town’s main market of Aniet. Since then, dozens have been killed, property looted or destroyed, and thousands fled their homes. The conflict was instigated by a presumably land border dispute.
