Eight men have been killed in an armed attack in Abyei Administrative Area. The incident occurred in Miodol village in Rumamer County on Sunday at 5 am. One civilian was wounded in the same attack.

A press statement issued by Abyei Special Administrative Area says the victims include five civilians from Abyei.

The Caretaker Commissioner of Rumamer, Chol Pur Chol says three of the attackers were killed. This brings the total lives lost in this incident to eight.

The administration blamed the attack on Sudan armed militiamen from Misseriya of Sudan and Sudan Armed Forces.

The statement further says 11 of the attackers were captured at the scene by the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei in Marial Achaak village on the same day.

The chief administrator of Abyei Administrative Area, Kuol Deim Kuol appealed to UNISFA to hand the suspected attackers to face justice in Abyei Area court.

Hon. Kuol says these suspects will be set free if they are handed over to Sudanese authorities as it has been. He condemned the attacks and passed condolences to victims’ families and appealed to the UN security council to suspend the replacement of the Ethiopian troops in UNISFA because of the current situation.

Abyei Administrative Area is a contested region between Sudan and South Sudan placed under protection of UN peacekeepers.
