UN security council extends UNISFA mandate by six months

The United Nation Security Council has again extended the mandate for UN peacekeeping mission in Abyei Administrative Area for six months.

The extension was agreed upon in UN Security Council meeting held on Thursday. According to the media reports the extension period will expire on 15 May 2022.

The United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei was deployed in 2011 with mandate to protect civilians in the contested region of Abyei. South Sudan and Sudan claim ownership of the oil rich Abyei.

The security council has extended the operation of UNISFA with forces reduced to 3,250 from nearly 4,500.

It urges the governments of Sudan and South Sudan to take steps to implement and facilitate confidence-building measures among the respective communities.
