United Nations volunteers at the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei and UN peace keeping soldiers in partnership with Abyei municipality conducted a cleaning campaign Abyei town in Abyei Administrative Area on Thursday.
The exercise was done in Nyinkuac residential area as part of celebration of the International Day of UN Volunteers. UN Volunteer Support Officer, Eunice Apita Alele said the cleaning campaign was conducted as part of awareness raising among the locals. She adds that cleaning campaign is part of the United Nations Volunteers’ program.
Abyei Town Mayor, Apac Deng Biong says accumulated garbage are a threat to the locals. He stresses the necessity to keep the environment clean through proper waste disposal to prevent the spread of diseases.
The Paramount Chief of Ngok Dinka, Bulabek Deng Kuol took part in the cleaning. Chief Kuol said the cleaning campaign is important. He noted that some town residents are disposing waste inappropriately.
The International Day of UN Volunteers is celebrated on the 5th of December every year. The program is done this year as part of the commemoration of the sixteen days of activism to end violence against women and girls.
