The celebration of the eighth anniversary of Ngok Dinka community referendum kicked off in Chuen Ayak in Abyei Town in Abyei Administrative Area on Friday.

The theme of the commemoration this year is:

“Resilience is the pride of Ngok Dinka people’s struggle.”

Speaking during Good Abyei Morning show, the caretaker head of administration of physical infrastructure and public utilities, Hon. Mayot Kunit Miyen said the celebration will last for three days.

He added that there were delegations coming neighboring areas like Aweil, Wau, Abiemnom and Twic to attend the event.

Furthermore, Hon. Kunit said local chiefs will present a petition demanding the recognition of the results of Abyei community referendum held in 2013.

The Ngok Dinka people conducted a unilateral referendum and voted nearly 100 percent in favor of joining South Sudan but the outcomes were not recognized.

Abyei is contested area between South Sudan and Sudan.
