Men charged with teenage girl rape in Abyei to appear before court next week

Two men charged with raping a 17-year-old girl in Abyei will appear before court next week, police say.

Community police Investigator, Mario Malual says the court session is expected to take place on Monday in Abyei town.

The suspects aged 18 and 20 were arrested early this month. Both were charged with rape last week.

Police officer says the men were released on surety bail.

The girl was reportedly raped in two separate incidents in Minyang village on 13th and 15th of December last year, according to police.

This is the thirteenth rape case recorded in Abyei Administrative Area last year.

In November, police revealed that 19 gender-based violence cases including 12 rape-all committed against women and girls were registered in 2020.

In December, 2020, a special court to try gender-based violence cases was inaugurated in South Sudan’s capital, Juba. It has sentenced two men with each sent to 10 years in jail for sexual assault, according to media report.

According to South Sudan Penal Code, having sex with someone below 18 years leads to 10-year imprisonment.
