The President of South Sudan Salva Kiir Mayardit has said they will conduct a full-scale disarmament of civilians in the country. Kiir said this in his statement on the Independence Day. The collection of firearms from hands of civilians has already started in Warrap state. Kiir says he will soon initiate community peace dialogue to end the communal fighting in the country.
The president appealed to traditional leaders to cooperate with soldiers carrying out the exercise.
“I hope our citizens who are unauthorized to bear guns will heed the call to disarmament and voluntarily their weapons to security forces,” President Kiir said in a statement seen by Abyei FM.
However, he threatened to use force against those who will resist the disarmament.
“For those who will not heed this call, the government will be left with no option than to forcefully remove these weapons from their hands,” Kiir warned.
